The Style and Sound of the ES-335's Second Decade
Gibson's venerable ES-335 represents an enduringly sworn-by semi-hollow recipe that has warranted few amendments since its inception. However, true Gibson enthusiasts — including many of us here at Sweetwater — will undoubtedly flock to the meticulously appointed second-decade features of the Gibson ES-335 60s. Structured with that legendary double-cut, thinline 3-ply body of maple-poplar-maple and internally treated with a solid maple center block, this ES-335 delivers an instantly recognizable feel and vintage-inspired sound. Fitted with an era-appropriate SlimTaper mahogany neck, the ES-335 '60s offers quick, incredibly smooth control. Tonally, Gibson's T-Type humbuckers give the ES-335 60s its voice, delivering that quintessential late-'60s blend of sonic balance and crystalline articulation. Supplementing its vintage shape and sonics are a multitude of visual touches perfectly emblematic of the decade's offerings, such as small block inlays, "milk bottle"-style Rotomatic tuners, black Top Hat knobs with pointers and silver reflectors, and that instantly identifiable short pickguard. For Gibson '60s purists and first-timers to the ES-335 alike, the ES-335 60s delivers the sound and style that cemented the original as an American icon.
Streamlined SlimTaper neck profile
Introduced for the early-’60s models, the Gibson SlimTaper neck profile offered a sleeker, speedier feel when compared to the '50s Chunky profiles. For true-to-form accuracy, you’ll find that same carve on the mahogany neck of the ES-335 60s. Topped with a beautiful bound rosewood fingerboard, 22 medium-jumbo frets, and a Graph Tech nut for a purified string response, you'll soon discover that from rhythm work to lead lines, the ES-335 60s radiates period-correct comfort and exquisite navigation for all players.
An homage to the original T-Tops
The ES-335 60s’ addition of T-Type humbuckers is a modern take on the beloved T-Top pickups featured in select Gibson models from 1966 to 1979. Noted by a raised “T” on top of the bobbin, the T-Top pickups enhance overall consistency and provide a brighter, clearer tone than original PAFs. The T-Type humbuckers honor the original T-Top design, complete with polysol wire, Alnico V magnets, and balanced, unpotted coils. The result? A vintage-correct tone that Sweetwater's Gibson aficionados champion for its crisp highs, smooth mids, and tight low-end response. Furthermore, handwired 500K potentiometers and Orange Drop capacitors accompany each pickup’s Volume and Tone control for authentic late-'60s voicing.
Styled to the ’60s standard
For retro-inspired '60s flair, start at the fingerboard and headstock, where small block inlays and supremely stable “milk bottle”-style Grover Rotomatic tuning machines enhance the aesthetic and elevate the playability of this mid-century-inspired model. The ’60s influence continues down at the body with black Top Hat knobs with silver reflectors and dial pointers, a period-correct shortened 5-ply pickguard, and an ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece. An assortment of iconic ’60s Gibson gloss nitrocellulose finishes, mother-of-pearl inlays, and cream binding give this guitar a proper vintage glow.
